My dad has a couple of domains registered using eNom.com. It was originally done on his behalf by someone else but I’ve since helped him to “take control”.

Today he forwarded an email he received, asking if he should be concerned. It begins with “On Thu, 30 Oct 2008 00:05:53 +0700 we received a third party complaint of invalid domain contact information in the Whois database for this domain” and then goes on to say they investigated, found the information to be incorrect and canceled the domain.

The domain has subsequently been purchased by another party. You will need to contact them for any further inquiries regarding the domain.

So I went to enom.com (directly, not via the link in the email…which, if you look, turns out not to be to enom.com) and they have a warning posted front and center.

The warning includes a link to an image of the text of the email (note that the plain text version they show reveals the bogus enom.com link).

So, if you’ve got any domains registered via eNom, beware of this scam. And remember to never follow the links (always go directly to the site) when you receive an email like this.

This is sad. Geoffrey Perkins died in a road accident yesterday. Father Ted is one of my favorite comedies ever, and its creator, Graham Linehan, shared a nice anecdote regarding Mr. Perkins’ contributions to its beginning.

Mr. Linehan had selected a theme song he felt to be perfect because of its silliness and because it would seem to be “subtly making fun” of the show. Geoffrey Perkins didn’t like it.

“Why do you want to make fun of your show?” said Geoffrey, finally, looking wounded and worried. “People will love these characters.”

I later realised that it was a fork in the road, that discussion, and if we had not travelled the way Geoffrey suggested, we’d have ended up lost…we may never have made it to series three. Without Geoffrey, ‘Father Ted’ would have been a cacophonous riot, and not nearly as loved as it is today. He gave the show a heart, and gave me–still very young, and unsure as to what type of person I should try to become– someone to model myself on.

Ten years ago, Dermont Morgan, the comedian who played the Father Ted character, also passed away unexpectedly. It’s a bit depressing to think that two people so connected to that show’s success are now gone.

Remember the <a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MzShg7yXik">Land of Confusion video? At the very end (~5:13), the Regan puppet inadvertently presses the “Nuke” button instead of the “Nurse” button (understandable mistake). It’s ridiculous because, of course, there wouldn’t actually have been a single button anyone could press that would launch nuclear missiles. Right? Actually, turns out, there was. Only it was in the Soviet Union.

I was perusing Ask MeFi the other day and came across a pretty interesting question: “Please help me out with my doomsday anxiety“. The OP was feeling some very real anxieties due to the seemingly endless reams of bad news lately. What he/she wanted was some genuine counter-arguments to add some levity and maybe even a bit of optimism to his/her outlook.

The very first response was:

Put it in perspective. 50 years ago–hell, 20 years ago–the entire world was one push of a button away from instant nuclear annihilation. Many people were convinced they would not live to middle age. Read about Col. Stanislav Petrov–a man who literally saved the world in a split-second decision.

The story that poster linked to, “Russian Colonel Who Averted Nuclear War Receives World Citizen Award”, is pretty amazing. And I had never heard of it.

He was the duty officer at Russia’s main nuclear command center in September 1983 when the system indicated a nuclear missile attack was launched by the U.S. on Russia.
…
Petrov was highly aware that Cold War tensions were acute, as USSR fighters had shot down a Korean airliner on Sept. 1. But he was completely shocked when the warning siren began to wail and two lights on his desk console began flashing MISSILE ATTACK and START. “Start” was the instruction to launch, irreversibly, all 5,000 or so Soviet missiles and obliterate America.

That’s right. Just hit “Start”, as in “Start Over”. Obviously Colonel Petrov resisted his trigger finger, and that single inaction probably prevented a Madmaxian world filled with razor-sharp boomerangs and shoulder pads.

I would have been 6.5 years old. It would have been around three on a Sunday afternoon. I wonder what I was doing right at that moment?

I saw a local news story today that actually got me a little riled (muttering words like ‘insane’ and ‘inane’ to myself). Apparently, it’s quite possible that both my name and signature, along with my social security number, are readily available at my county’s probate court website.

(Updated)

Private Information is Public Record

Mobile County Probate Judge Don Davis tells News Five when it comes to what information is published, his hands are tied. Davis says his office is obligated by Alabama law to publish mortgages, deeds, incorporations and other documents exactly as they are submitted, so if you’re bank or mortgage broker included your social security number, it becomes public record.
“Current Alabama law does not permit a probate judge, anywhere in the state of Alabama, to redact information off a document,” said Davis, who has spent the last two years working with lawmakers to address the issue. Davis says the Alabama House of Representatives passed a bill to allow Probate Judges to delete private information, but the measure failed in the Senate. Davis says the legislation was supported by the Alabama Association of Probate Judges and the Alabama Banking Association.

When I try registering at the site to do my own searches, I get some nicely formatted .NET framework error messages and stack traces. I’ve also tried tracking down the exact bill that went through the house but somehow failed (epic) the senate. It’d be great if the reporter would follow up on that detail. It seems strange that something like that wouldn’t pass, but I’m sure there’s some political theater involved preventing useful and necessary improvements from happening.

Update: There was a follow-up report. Apparently it’s not that the bill failed in the senate. The problem is that it never reached the senate.

We contacted Mobile senators to find out why the bill was not brought up for a vote in the Senate, but one senator, Vivian Davis-Figures, declined to comment. Senator Rusty Glover, who also represents Mobile, blamed partisan bickering for holding several bills hostage, including this one. Glover promises to support the legislation when it is brought up for a third time next year, but says the power to decide what bill comes up for a vote is up to one lawmaker— Senator Lowell Barron, a Democrat from Fyffe.

I was reading this story the other day in the paper. It’s about an 11 month old boy found 150 yards from the slab that used to be his house. A tornado ripped it apart and killed his mother. Miraculous and heartbreaking stuff. Even though I live in a part of the country where they are extremely rare, and have never personally had an experience with one, I’ve had nightmares about tornados. I think maybe four or five in all over the past maybe fifteen years. And so when reading that article, this description recounted by one survivor really stood out:

James Krueger, a 49-year-old electrician, opened the door to look out of the 100-year-old home he was restoring and the wind sucked the door from his hand. He dived onto the ground “as if I was sliding into first.” The house was pulled out from under him — and when it was over, he was on bare ground.

Can you imagine? I could only hope that if in the same situation, it all happens too fast for the fear to have time to take hold of me. And if later asked by a reporter how it all felt, I know my quote wouldn’t be nearly as enthralling as what this man provided:

“It was like God was holding my leg and beating the (expletive) out of me for everything I’ve done in my life,” said Krueger, of Lafayette. “Maybe I tried to question God too many times, but the bottom line is something kept me there.”

I wish I knew what the “expletive” was though. Regardless of how you feel about language like that, there are most definitely occasions where it’s called for, and I would love to have that quote exactly as it was given.

The FAQ page for the Associated Press provides an email address to use if you want to contact a reporter (it says the email will be forwarded to the appropriate person). I just wrote the following in hopes of getting the uncensored version of the quote:

I recently read your story “Baby a Sign of Hope in Devastated South” in which you quote Mr. James Krueger as saying:

It was like God was holding my leg and beating the (expletive) out of me for everything I’ve done in my life…

I found the full quote to be one of the most enthralling I’ve ever read and, if at all possible, I would like to know what “expletive” was used by Mr. Krueger. I know that strong language is not appropriate for all public consumption, and the need to edit it is unavoidable, but given the horrific nature of the events, I feel that knowing the exact quote would add more weight to his words. I’ve posted a link to the story at my personal website and, if you permit, would like to be able to provide the unedited version.

I asked that it be forwarded to one of the two reporters responsible for the story. I’ll update this entry if I receive a response.

Waxy links to the surreal story of Lewiston Tribune’s December 13th issue. The front page that Thursday featured two color photos. The first of a local man decorating a storefront window with some holiday artwork. The second picture is the surveillance camera image of a man who soon makes away with an unattended wallet. In the first picture, the local man is identified. In the second, his identity is sought. Funny thing is, the two men look remarkably similar.

Local police noticed the similarities, and quickly arrested the hapless criminal mastermind for felony second-degree theft.

How many residents of Lewiston, ID do you think sat down with their morning paper that day and actually noticed? I have to admit I probably wouldn’t have made the connection, even with the two photos sitting right next to each other. I tried finding the next day’s front page at Newseum but couldn’t. So I searched the Lewiston Tribune Online and found a match for what appears to be a follow-up story. Unfortunately you have to be a paid subscriber to access the story and the two Bugmenot entries for that site didn’t work. Anyway, the whole thing seems like the solution to some preteen mystery novel.
